German Market Report · First book

Which book comes out in German first?

November 2026 · 3 min read

Last issue I looked at how far the German side of a series goes. This time I wanted the starting point. When indie authors who publish their own German editions start a German series, which book comes out in German first?

I took a fresh random sample of 150 authors from the ones I check for my work. On Amazon.de I opened their German listings one by one and read the series line (“Buch 1 von 8”), the release date shown and the language.

62 authors had catalogues too big for my three-page search, so I left them out. Of the other 88, 85 had at least one dated German listing. That's the group here, with a median of 9 German listings each.

Book 1 goes first

72.9%

started their German side with book 1 of a series

96.8%

of 190 German series include book 1 in German

5.9%

started with a later book

88.2%

have at least one German book 1

What came out in German first (85 authors)
Book 1 alone on that date57.6%
Book 1, same date as another German listing15.3%
No series line20.0%
A later book in a series5.9%
A box set1.2%

Earliest release date shown on Amazon.de.

So 62 of 85 opened with book 1, mostly on its own. Only 5 started with a later book and 1 with a box set. The 17 with no series line could be standalones or books not linked to a series. I didn't check which.

The series count agrees. Of 190 German series, 184 include book 1 in German and 6 start later. 71 of the 85 authors have book 1 in German for every German series they publish.

And most starts are recent

Year of the earliest German edition (85 authors)
Before 202010.6%
2020 to 202321.2%
202412.9%
202538.8%
2026 (to 5 Nov)16.5%

Release date as shown on Amazon.de.

For 47 of the 85 (55.3%), the earliest German date shown is 2025 or 2026. A re-release can carry a newer date, so I hold that loosely.

Daniel's take

My read: in this group, starting a German series anywhere but book 1 is rare. Listings can't tell me why, and I won't guess.

What I do think: a German reader meets your series wherever you start it in German. Book 1 asks nothing of them. If you start later, I'd make that a deliberate choice, not just the book that happened to be ready first.

Starting at book 1 is the part most of these authors already get right. How far the German run goes after that is the harder question.

Planning a German series? My German launch checklist and How to choose a German translator.

How I counted. Population: 946 self-published English-language indie authors I've checked for my work whose German check showed German editions they publish themselves (or a mix). Sample: 150 at random, different from Issues 1 to 3. On 5 November 2026 I searched each name in the Amazon.de Kindle store, up to three result pages, rows with the author's byline. For authors not cut off, I opened every German listing's product page (938 pages). “First” means the earliest release date shown, and a re-release can carry a later date. Series position comes from Amazon's series line. Box sets are spotted by title pattern. The 62 cut-off authors are left out, so results lean to smaller German catalogues.
